Sustainability

The Future LINK KYOTO Envisions

Kyoto is a famous international cultural and tourist destination, and a sustainable city where tradition and innovation thrive.
Building on the earlier model of mass tourism, which already affected Kyoto before the coronavirus pandemic, we have chosen to change our approach to tourism. Our focus is now on restoring Kyoto to its original state by avoiding over-commercialization that harms its living environment and culture. The aim is to adopt a more sustainable way of being.
At LINK KYOTO, we are committed to promoting sustainable tourism according to the following policy.

We Aspire To

Arrange Tours Responsibly

We select accommodations and businesses that are dedicated to sustainable tourism or possess a recognized sustainable tourism certification.
We do not conduct tours that could harm the natural, cultural, or social environment.
Additionally, our lead guides, tour leaders, and local staff receive training beforehand to familiarize themselves with key points specific to each destination, including general principles of sustainable tourism and proper etiquette when visiting special areas such as World Heritage sites, protected areas, and national parks.

Implement Sustainability Education

LINK KYOTO recommends that employees participate in the Sustainable Tourism Training Program (STTP).
This training course brings together a diverse group of professionals—including hotel and tour operator managers, local authorities, government officials, consultants, NGOs, and academic institutions. Together, we back initiatives that speed up the shift to sustainable tourism practices.

Design Tourism for Sustainable Development

1. Environment (ECO) friendly
  1. We will prioritize transportation methods that produce low CO2 emissions and vehicles that reduce environmental impact.
  2. We will eliminate unnecessary items during the tour and focus on using recyclable materials.
  3. We aim to lower energy use and CO2 emissions from transportation by utilizing ingredients that are produced locally for local consumers.
  4. We support carbon offset programs by having the CO2 emissions from our tours absorbed elsewhere, helping to protect our planet's future.
  5. We provide opportunities to learn about environmental conservation through hands-on experiences.
2. Cross-cultural exchange
  1. We offer opportunities to learn through hands-on experience about preserving culture and art.
  2. Through our tourism exchange tours, we will develop new content that highlights the region’s unique charm and wit without compromising its intrinsic value, thereby supporting regional revitalization.
  3. By providing opportunities to explore the area's culture, nature, and history, and to engage with local communities, we aim to share the region's stories and wisdom, create memorable experiences for tourists, and foster pride and initiative among residents.
  4. By providing traditional cuisine (local cuisine) using local ingredients, we promote food culture and contribute to cultural heritage.
3. Social contribution
  1. By offering opportunities for tour participants to engage with local businesses, we generate direct revenue for the region and support economic growth.
  2. We aim to strengthen the connection between accommodation providers and local producers, particularly by promoting the production and distribution of local ingredients and souvenirs.
  3. To support the preservation of nature, art, and culture, we will donate a portion of the travel fee to social projects, such as local associations, and to fund community-based activities.
  4. Part of the tour fee will go toward activities and workshops that promote sustainability education.
