The Aoi Festival decorates Kyoto's refreshing early summer with an elegant procession.

This is an annual festival of Kamo Miso Shrine (Shimogamo Shrine) and Kamobetsu Rai Shrine (Kamigamo Shrine) that is said to have started about 1,500 years ago. Various events (zengi) are held from the beginning of May, and on May 15th, the ``roadside ceremony'' is held, where people wearing Heian costumes parade for about 8 kilometers.
