[Kyoto's Three Major Festivals] Jidai Matsuri Festival
Cultural TourismSustainability
What is Jidai Matsuri?
Jidai Matsuri, or the "Festival of the Ages," is one of Kyoto's three most famous traditional festivals, alongside the Aoi Matsuri and Gion Matsuri. First held in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto becoming Japan's capital, the festival is now celebrated annually on October 22.
The festival's highlight is a magnificent historical parade that recreates nearly 1,000 years of Kyoto's history, taking spectators on a journey from the Meiji era back to the Heian period. Approximately 2,000 participants dressed in authentic historical costumes march from Kyoto Gyoen (Kyoto Imperial Palace Park) to Heian Jingu Shrine.
The procession features famous historical figures such as Saigo Takamori and Oda Nobunaga, as well as court nobles, samurai warriors, and townspeople. Carefully researched costumes, hairstyles, and ceremonial items bring each era vividly to life, creating a spectacular panorama of Kyoto's rich history.
The parade concludes with a sacred procession associated with Heian Jingu Shrine, reflecting Kyoto's long-standing traditions and cultural heritage. Today, Jidai Matsuri remains one of the city's most important annual events and a unique opportunity to experience over 1,000 years of Japanese history in a single day.
